REVIEW: Big Book of Trucks by Patricia Relf (Tonka)

tonka-big-book-of-trucksA row of Tonka books were set in front of the low sofa at the library and this “Big Book of Trucks” with a dump truck in action caught my toddler’s eye immediately!

Grabbing the book, he sat down on the settee and flipped through the pages, enjoying every colourful page of front loaders, dump trucks, pavers, tractors, fire engines and other trucks at work.

He then asked us to read it to him and he was hooked. We had it on loan for 2 weeks (renewed for another 2 weeks!) and I had to read this book to him EVERY night! Imagine almost 28 readings from cover to cover…

“The Big Book of Trucks” is an informational and entertaining book about trucks because we are introduced to the types of trucks used:

  • to build roads – grader, paver, mixer;
  • for odd jobs around town – cherry picker, mail truck, recycler;
  • on a farm – mower, tractor, baler;
  • on the highway – tanker trailer, tow truck, car transporter;
  • in rescue efforts – fire engine, ambulance;
  • at the shipyard – forklift, crane;
  • at the space shuttle…

Each section first presents the trucks in an overview in action on location while the next page describes them in detail. Overall, this Tonka book is a great read which isn’t surprising as it’s an imprint under Scholastic publications.

Because his earlier book on trucks is in British English (Tonka is American), there were some conflicts between “concrete mixer” and “cement mixer” and “garbage truck” with “rubbish truck”.

Anyway, I loved the illustrations because they:

  • were very vivid and full of action e.g. rescue at a fire,
  • depict people of various ethnic groups,
  • showed both women and men at work i.e. no gender stereotyping :-)

Because he loved the book so much, Hubby and I hope to add Big Book Of Trucks (Tonka) to his collection if we can find it…

On our second trip to the library, Lucas had already picked out another book under the Tonka series – “Fire Truck to the Rescue” :-)

Here are other books under the Tonka series:

REVIEW: The Moose with Loose Poops by Dr. Charlotte Cowan

the-moose-with-loose-poops-charlotte-cowanDiarrhea and vomiting and have been far too frequent since our move to China that I find Dr. Charlotte Cowan’s “The Moose with Loose Poops” a useful book to read with my toddler.

A board-certified fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a mother and a former English teacher, Dr. Cowan

“offers a clear and childfriendly explanation of gastroenteritis…she captures the misery of tummy aches, caused first by vomiting and then by diarrhea, and writes to educate, entertain and comfort her small readers—as well as their parents.”

While I had my “What to Expect: The Toddler Years” as a reference to understand what’s going on, I’m glad that Lucas now has a book to understand diarrhea and vomiting.

The Moose with Loose Poops” begins with Miles the Moose and his family on a camping trip and discussion about his upcoming canoe ride and fishing expedition when he develops a stomachache and vomits out his food.

REVIEW: The Great Book of Transport by Lynne Gibbs

When my toddler’s included trucks as well as trains, I knew I needed a book to help me with the vocabulary for this traditionally male territory. Not knowing if I may need to know about other types of transport, I was glad I found this bumper book!

Recommended for ages 9-12, this hardcover 150 page reference contains more than 400 full colour photographs of the “biggest, boldest and most stunning models” of all time (as at 2006, that is).

My 2 year old drummed his feet in excitement when he saw it and couldn’t wait for me to read it with him!

With him on my lap, we explored every page of full-colour illustrations, while I quickly skimmed the names of each vehicle. A brief history and up-to-date information about each mode of trasnport is included. Also, I find the “How It Works” sections really useful as I can imagine revisiting this book when he starts learning Science in primary school.

This section provides simple and clear illustrations of each type of vehicle with name labels and concise explanation of how they work. That way, when Lucas now asks me,

“What is this?”

I can confidently name the parts of a train e.g. a “piston bar”, a “flange”, a “chimney” and a “dome” while explaining in as simple a way as possible what each function is for.

Needless to say, this book has become one of our regular reads during the daytime and at bedtime. While he drooled over the number of trains featured, he also learned about other types of transport.

Interestingly, he taught me that the Stirling 8ft Single Class 4-2-2, which was one of the most beautiful engines ever made is “Emily” (from the Thomas and Friends series). Also, Flying Scotsman, which was the first express passenger locomotive and sole survivor after the British Railways scrapped over 70 similar others” and the Turbomotive 4-6-2 is “Henry”.

The Turbomotive looked like Gordon to me but my tiny tot was very firm about this! I decided to bring out his “Railway Rhymes” for comparison…and he was right :-)

As we continue to read the book, I learnt a lot about the history of transport, how they work and other interesting trivia in their “MEGA FACT” boxes. Initially, I watered down the names of the transport by calling them “big, yellow train” etc which later sounded really silly to me.

I found that it’s better for me to read them as they appeared on the pages and now, Lucas can point out to family and friends these:

the Centennial, the TGV, monorail, airport train, Eurostar, Pendolino, Shinkansen, a motorbike, a scooter, big rig, a monster truck, a petrol tanker, a dumper, a concrete mixer, a fire engine, a rubbish truck, a crane, a Hummer, a helicopter (or Harold the helicopter), a hot air balloon and a glider!

All in all, I’d say that this is an excellent buy that will see me through the preschool (for language and special interest) and primary years (for language, science and general knowledge), while fuelling his interest in trains and trucks.
