Thai Food and Donuts at KL Pavilion

August 1, 2012

I have been clearing up my photo database and found A LOT of photos I’d taken of all the foods we have been trying.

I thought it’d be fun to post them up here and see if anyone else shares the same sentiments as I do ;-)

I hadn’t been to KL (Kuala Lumpur) for years but something came up and I was delighted to go there on my own. My host was none other than a hip and young KL-ite.

The Pavilion had just opened, replacing the prestigious Bukit Bintang Girls School. Gasp! They actually relocated a 107 year old school (one of the oldest in Kuala Lumpur) for a mall…

I was dumb-struck as I walked along the newly opened stores, wondering how the former students must feel knowing that their alma mater has been demolished and now, a spanking new mall is in its place? How do they show their kids that this used to be granny’s or mummy’s old school? Sad.

My partner and I decided to plonk ourselves down at Rak Thai Restaurant to talk more about this. I love Thai food but I was dismayed to see all the chairs occupied…

Sorry, I have a really BAD back. And since my work keeps me on my feet all day long, I steer clear of stools…

With aching feet from a bit of shopping and window-shopping, I decided to be a good sport and sat down to look forward to the yummy Thai food.

Here’s what we ordered:

Som Tam (Green Papaya Salad with Dried Shrimps and Roasted Peanuts)

I don’t really like sour foods but a Filipino gentleman convinced me that this is not sour but a sweet-and-sour delight that I would become addicted to. He was right – I’d order this almost every time I ate at a Thai restaurant LOL

Pineapple Fried Rice

Normally, I would go for the spicy fried rice as I don’t like pineapple but the pineapple fried rice at Rak Thai was really well done and not overly sweet.

Sweet Mango with Glutinous Rice and Coconut Milk

I don’t really like this dish but my lunch date has a sweet tooth and insisted on ordering this.

Since he couldn’t finish it all on his own, I helped him by taking a few slices of the sweet mango.

After that, we looked around for snacks to pack home and came upon a crowded J.Co Donuts, which is an Indonesian chain. Can you imagine lining up for doughnuts?

We can’t and decided to check out Big Apple Donuts:

We decided to get two boxes of 6. My favourite doughnut is the original Krispy Kreme so naturally, my first choice was “Glacier”:

We went for the Belgian Chocolate for the chocaholics:

For health sake, we threw in a couple of “California Almonds”:

Here’s the other box, which contained some blueberry topped doughnuts and a few other flavours I can’t recall:

Ahh…I had such a nice time since I had no kids to teach or supervise. When can I do this again???
