Everything Sucks, The Corrections or Seal Intestine Raincoat?

by Kit on May 28, 2010

I’ve never joined any book giveaways, mostly because most of them are limited to US or Canadian entries. Interestingly, I joined an international giveaway and I won!

From the list of 21 books, here are the 3 titles I gave for the ONE book I’ll be winning:

Everything Sucks: Losing My Mind and Finding Myself in a High School Quest for Coolby Hannah Friedman (paperback)

“When everything sucks,
change everything . . .”

Synopsis: And that’s exactly what Hannah Friedman set out to do in an ambitious attempt to bust out of a life of obscurity and absurdity and into an alternate world of glamour, wealth, and popularity.

Being dubbed ‘That Monkey Girl’ by middle school bullies and being pulled out of sixth grade to live on a tour bus with her agoraphobic mother, her smelly little brother, and her father’s hippie band mates convinces Hannah that she is destined for a life of freakdom.

But when she enters one of the country’s most prestigious boarding schools on scholarship, Hannah transforms herself into everything she is not: cool. By senior year, she has a perfect millionaire boyfriend, a perfect GPA, a perfect designer wardrobe, and is part of the most popular clique in school, but somehow everything begins to suck far worse than when she first started. Her newfound costly drug habit, eating disorder, identity crisis, and Queen-Bee attitude lead to the unraveling of Hannah’s very unusual life.

Putting her life back together will take more than a few clicks of her heels, or the perfect fit of a glass slipper, in this not-so-fairy tale of going from rock bottom to head of the class and back again.

The Corrections: A Novel by Jonathan Franzen

Synopsis (from Wikipedia):

Alfred Lambert, the patriarch of a seemingly normal family living in the fictional town of St. Jude, suffers from Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

Enid, his long-suffering wife, suffers from Alfred’s controlling, rigid behavior and her own embarrassment at what she perceives as her family’s shortcomings.

Their children all live in the Northeast. Gary, the eldest Lambert son, is a successful banker who refuses to believe that he has clinical depression, and, as a result, becomes increasingly paranoid, suspecting that his wife and sons are conspiring against him.

Chip, the middle child, is a failed college professor whose disastrous affair with a student sends his life into decline and lands him in the employ of a Lithuanian crime boss. Denise, the youngest of the family, is successful in her career as a chef. Circumstances lead her to become involved with her boss’s wife.

Seal Intestine Raincoat by Rosie Chard

Synopsis:
After a severe winter storm and extended power failure, thousands become trapped in their homes during one of the coldest weeks of the year. For one small group of people, thrown together by catastrophe, a state of anxiety and claustrophobia follows as they discover no precautions have been made for a disaster of this magnitude.

When the dark and cold continues, endurance turns to despair and plans for survival begin to emerge as Fred, a fifteen-year-old boy from England, is forced to take charge in unpredictable ways.

Alongside its bleak portrayal of social instability during economic collapse, “Seal Intestine Raincoat” unearths the powerful human instincts that convert helpless fear into the desire to adapt.

Why did I choose these 3 titles?

One, I’ve already got some of the titles in the list ;-)

Two, at the time of choosing, I wasn’t in the mood for “dark and depressing” books BUT I was still up for interesting reads. Guess you can tell why “Seal Intestine Raincoat” with its sombre title and cover is last in the list. If I recall, I’d chosen it because the book includes some references with the Inuits in Alaska.

God forbid I’ll be getting that book in the mail O_O

Three, although I listed “Everything Sucks” first, I hope that I’ll be getting “The Corrections” because I am somewhat attracted to reading on dysfunctional families…

JT Oldfield mentioned that she’s just sent the books on their way so I’m stalking the postman LOL

A note of thanks to Josette for blogging about the giveaway :D
