A sentimental book meme

by KittyCat on February 13, 2009

As I’m now flu-ey and *missing* Malaysia miserably, it’s the ideal time to do this book meme from Josette. Thanks for the tag!

The Rules

1. Tag 3-5 people, so the fun keeps going!
2. Leave a comment at the original post at A Striped Armchair, so that Eva can collect everyone’s answers.
3. If you leave a comment and link back to Eva as the meme’s creator, she will enter you in a book giveaway contest! She has a whole shelf devoted to giveaway books that you’ll be able to choose from, or a bookmooch point if you prefer.
4. Remember that this is all about enjoying books as physical objects, so feel free to describe the exact book you’re talking about, down to that warping from being dropped in the bath water…
5. Make the meme more fun with visuals! Covers of the specific edition you’re talking about, photos of your bookshelves, etc.

The book that’s been on your shelves the longest:
A set of children’s books called “A Child’s World”, which had fascinating volumes called “Story World”, “People and Great Deeds”, “Animals and Living Things” and “Children from other Countries”, which helped provide most of the general knowledge I’ve got up in my noggin!

My parents bought the set on installment and I forget how many monthly installments they had to pay before the set was entirely ours.

I remember waiting for a long time before I could start school at the new town we’d moved to – these wonderful books kept me busy (and out of my Mum’s face!) during those weeks :-)

This precious set is now at my apartment and I’m gonna hang on to it for my own kids and other kids in the family who love reading…

A book that reminds you of something specific in your life (a person, a place, a time, etc.):

road_less_travelled 2 books that never fail to make me laugh are: The Road Less Travelled by M. Scott Peck and Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy.

Knowing how much I love books, Hubby (who’s not much of a reader) bought the first for me in a loving attempt to add to my book collection. However, I found “The Road Less Travelled” dreadfully dull although I love books on psychology, I could never finish this one.

He’d also bought the second book for me and this caused me *extreme anguish* because he got it all the way from the US for me — although I could easily & cheaply get “Anna Karenina” (and most classics) in Malaysia for about US$2 each?

anna_karenina I think I nearly died when he told me he’d paid US$10++ for it at Barnes & Noble because I’m thinking of all the OTHER books he could have gotten for me there. It’s my fault too for failing to provide a book list :P

I just love to wave these 2 books at Hubby whenever I’m in the mood to tease him…

A book you acquired in some interesting way (gift, serendipity in a used bookstore, prize, etc.):
An old textbook on Psychology my late father bought for me during my first year at the university.

He was extremely proud of the fact that I’ll be the first graduate in the family that he bought me the book, thinking that I could use it for my class.

I think he was disappointed when I told him we had to buy the latest edition (according to the book list our lecturer provided). We never found out from which bookshop my father bought the old textbook but I remember it fondly from now on as a gift of love from him.

A book that’s been with you to the most places:
I can’t think of any since I’d bring a new book to read if I am on travel. Interestingly, many of the books I’d read related to China in the past are now being re-read with a fresh perspective :-) Do they they count?

The most recent addition to your shelves:
A bunch of Ladybird Classic Tales for my boy…

A bonus book that you want to talk about but doesn’t fit into the other questions:
I’m reading A Child Called “It” by Dave Pelzer now but am having difficulty finishing the book or accepting that it’s a TRUE STORY.

Now who to tag?
Hmm…this is tough as I’ve not been visiting any book bloggers lately. I think I’ll tag the “Challengers”:
- Drey
-Jibeng
- Belle and
- KakChik of Maribaca and
- Nor of Cerita Mama
