Read A Book A Month Challenge

by KittyCat on December 31, 2008

*THIS IS A STICKY POST. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR LATEST POSTS*

In 2008, I joined 2 reading challenges and am happy that I could finish the Young Readers’ Challenge!

I missed 3 books off the Young Adult Challenge but still, it’s great to know that my kid read 12 books and I read 10 books myself…

ReadABookAMonth_small

For 2009, I would like to call on ALL readers (*especially Malaysian students, Mums and Dads!!!) to join me in this reading challenge.

HOW TO JOIN?
1. Just make a list of 12 books you will read with your child in 2009. Join in anytime and don’t worry if you haven’t got your list yet!
2. Start off with 1-2 books you have at home…(textbooks NOT allowed!)
3. If you have a blog, add a comment here with a link to your blog.
4. If you don’t have a blog, add a comment here with your list of books. You’re welcome to check in regularly to keep each other on track!

5. If you’d like to add the button on your blog, here’s the HTML code. Just copy and paste it onto your blog:

<a href=”http://www.flickr.com/photos/kittycat2006/3169571149/” title=”ReadABookAMonth_small by kitty_cat2008, on Flickr”><img src=”http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1030/3169571149_995b1f0188_m.jpg” width=”218″ height=”192″ alt=”ReadABookAMonth_small” /></a>

WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN

For your child…
1. You’ll spend some quality time with your child. And your child will treasure the memory of having you ALL to himself/herself for that time.
2. Your child will have read at least ONE book in a month = 12 books in a year.
3. It’s a great way to drag your child away from the PSP, Gameboy, Wii, TV or Internet!
4. Open your child’s mind with a new experience and (hopefully) a new hobby and love for lifelong learning…

For you…
You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you actually READ 12 books in a year!

Let’s work together to encourage reading among our children, shall we? I hope you’ll join me in this challenge. Let’s change the statistics from TWO to TWELVE!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009!

*NOTE: I’m encouraging Malaysians because statistics (1996-2005) show that:
a) In 1996, Malaysian children read only TWO books a year. In 2005, Malaysian children STILL read only an average of TWO books a year.
b) Books make up only 3% of the chosen reading material compared to newspapers, which make up 77.4%!
c) Malaysia has not reached a 100% literacy rate yet.
d) 60% respond that other interests are taking up reading time…

Hello!

Happy New Year to you!

I don’t have a child but I’m interested in this challenge. Can my list of books cross over with other challenges?

Ouch! Only two books a year? It’s so sad… Then who are those people buying books at bookstores? Is it that they only buy books but they don’t actually read them?

a-moms-diary January 1, 2009 at 11:41 pm

Haha…I thought the challenge is for ME to Read-A-Book-A-Month, which is like Mission Impossible to me. But reading one book a month with YY doesn’t sound half bad.

Josette January 1, 2009 at 11:55 pm

Hey, I’ve added your challenge to my list of challenges for 2009. I already have ten challenges! Wow.

Well, reading more books this year is one of my New Year resolutions so these challenges will just help keep me right on track. :)

Oh, I’ll put up my list of books on my Challenges page.

KittyCat January 2, 2009 at 12:05 am

Josette – Thanks! Great to hear that you’ll join in the challenge :-) Sure, ANY books are allowed as long as they are not textbooks!

A Mom’s Diary – Ya, I’m behind on my own reading as I’ve been reading more kids books. Do join in! Can’t wait to see what books you read with YY :-)

drey January 2, 2009 at 5:17 am

KittyCat ~ the little man & I are in for this one. We’ll list our books here. =)

sting January 3, 2009 at 12:18 am

oh this is a very good challenge. love your reviews very much. would love to take up this challenge but not at this moment yet… am still trying to introduce books to my kid :-)

KittyCat January 3, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Sting – Nice to know you like the reviews as I hardly get feedback on this blog!

I’m also happy to know that you will be starting your kid on reading soon. Do join the challenge by listing out the books you hope to read with him. That’s part of the fun, see?

Anyway, let me know if I can help ok?

jibeng January 5, 2009 at 3:43 pm

a good way to kick start an old habit.
game on!!

KittyCat January 5, 2009 at 7:26 pm

Jibeng – Nice to see another participant! Remember to return with a link to your list of books :)

Lindy January 6, 2009 at 12:07 am

My kid is nearly 40, but I do have grandchildren, so I will read to them. I have no books hee, so will hve to see waht the library has. No blog either.

Sue January 6, 2009 at 6:43 am

This will give me time to read with my nephews

KittyCat January 6, 2009 at 7:23 am

Lindy – I love your determination & spirit to read to your grandkids! With such a strong drive, I’m sure we’ll hear from you soon with your list of books ;-)

Sue – Welcome, welcome! You’re a good aunt and the boys will remember you for this.

Judy (Intergalactic Bookworm) January 6, 2009 at 1:23 pm

I wish that I could do this challenge. I have 8 nieces and nephews ranging in age from 2 16 year olds-cousins-to a 4 year old, but sadly my ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease took away my ability to speak clearly. I am waiting for a speaking machine. I miss reading to the younger ones! Judy

Belle January 12, 2009 at 11:27 am

This sounds like a great challenge! I decided to add some twists to it for myself – my post is here. I’ll keep it updated with my list of books!

yvonne January 12, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Been thinking about this challenge. Care to share some good books that you have read for Lucas?

KittyCat January 12, 2009 at 6:55 pm

Judy – Sorry to hear about your situation and I’m touched by your wanting to read to all the kids around your place. You’re such an inspiration to any Mum or Dad who can read but are either too busy or otherwise to do so. Hope you’ll get your speaking machine soon…

Belle – Welcome, welcome! Love twist you’ve given to the challenge and look forward to see your list soon…

Yvonne – Goodie!!! I was thinking of compiling an updated list of that. Thanks for nudging me on this. In the meantime, here are some of his reads: http://rightreads.com/reading-challenges/

MamaIrfan January 14, 2009 at 12:08 am

This is great! I take the challenge then hihihi

moremummy January 14, 2009 at 2:16 pm

I am a Granny who helps as a resource person for two very busy parents. We live in Kuala Lumpur.
Reading bedtime stories has been part of the day’s routine since they were tiny. The twins are now 4 and Junior is 2.
We have books of our own and I borrow from a children’s library where I help as a volunteer once a week.
All the adults read – newspapers, magazines, books and online.
I expect the children to copy the modelled behaviour ie READ

KittyCat January 16, 2009 at 8:01 am

MamaIrfan – I’m happy to see you accepting the invitation! Can’t wait to see the books you’ve selected for Irfan :)

Moremummy – Hello! The kids at home and at the library are really lucky to have you as a resource person. I strongly believe that the kids will read because my dad read, we read and now, my kid’s reading.

I’m gonna check out the kids’ library in China too and see where I can help.

KakChik January 16, 2009 at 9:21 am

Hi KittyCat.
Thanks for inviting me for the Reading Challenge. Really interesting and I’d love to join too. I think it would be okay if I read with my nieces and nephews because I don’t have my own kids. I’ll be sticking the button at my blogs.
Thanks.

KittyCat January 17, 2009 at 9:38 pm

KakChik – That’s great!!! Do come back with your list of books, ok? I’m quite excited to find some really nice aunts out there who read to kids…

KakChik of Maribaca January 18, 2009 at 4:32 pm

Hi KittyCat.

I’ve already make a post on this challenge and the link is here: http://maribaca.blogspot.com/2009/01/read-book-month-challenge.html

And Happy Chinese New Year to you & your family.

An Ocean Apart, a World Away by Lensey Namioka

mott April 7, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Hey..

I didn’t realise you were doing a challenge. My No.1 is already participating in a state reading challenge, and has to read 30 books by Aug. He’s done 20 books already. Heheheh…

As for me…I’ve just finished Change of Heart by Jodi Piccolt and now am rereading Life of Pi – Yann Martal. I shall link up my reviews soon on my blog. ;)

KittyCat April 8, 2009 at 7:39 am

Mott – I started the challenge and it sounds like your son and you are perfect contestants for it too :-) Looking forward to your reviews here on Mr. Linky!!!

wen April 9, 2009 at 10:57 pm

1 book a month is not that bad. i am currently reading children’s bible to my kids every night.

KittyCat April 10, 2009 at 10:56 am

Wen – Join, join, join! We’ve been trying to read a child’s book of prayers to him too but he’s not interested. I think bible stories may be a better option :-)
