The Bookworm’s tag
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
I grabbed this meme from my book buddy, Josette. Thought it’d be fun to do a non-Mummy tag for once
Do you remember how you developed a love for reading?
I was 9 years old and spent my year end holidays at the Berita Book Center in BB Plaza. A kind salesman guided me to leave the ‘babyish’ Ladybird towards Enid Blyton. No turning back then!
What are some books you read as a child?
Enid Blyton books and a set of encyclopedia called “The Child’s World” my father bought for my family. They are priceless!
What is your favourite genre?
Yikes…I don’t play favourites! I generally gravitate towards young adult, children’s lit, history, chicklit, psychological thrillers and now autobiographies/biographies. Fantasy and sci-fi are the only genres that elude me
Do you have a favourite novel?
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. I just love reading about the life of Han, the Chinese farmer…
Where do you usually read?
On the couch, on the bed or in the toilet…yup, that’s what time-strapped bookworms resort to, I’m afraid.
When do you usually read?
When my toddler drags me to accompany him to watch yet another rerun of Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder or Polar Express. I can read anytime actually, especially if it’s a hard-to-put-down book!
Do you usually have more than one book you are reading at a time?
Yes! Currently, I’m reading up to 3 books…the other 2 are references.
Do you read nonfiction in a different way or place than you read fiction?
Yes. For non-fiction, it really depends on the reason I’m reading them for. I tend to read it all the way through once and then go back again through the Index or Contents page if I want to revisit a topic.
But there are some fantastic fiction that I can read over and over again until the book begs to be put down!
Do you buy most of the books you read, or borrow them, or check them out of the library?
I used to borrow many of them from the school or public library when I was studying or teaching. Nowadays, I buy or get them for reviews!
Do you keep most of the books you buy? If not, what do you do with them?
Yes, as I only buy books I REALLY want to read. I only give away books that have disappointed me, especially when the blurb turned out to be more exciting than the book itself!
I’ve tried selling my old books but that hasn’t been very successful that I end up giving them away. At least I know they’ll go to someone who’ll appreciate them. I just can’t stand the thought of their being turned to pulp, with the exception of some dreadfully bad reads, of course.
If you have children, what are some of the favorite books you have shared with them? Were they some of the same ones you read as a child?
I have a son and he seems to be interested in boyish themes, which make it rather difficult for me to share some of my childhood reads. Thus, I look for “gender-neutral” books like Paddington Bear and other animal-themed books, which he seems to love also.
I can’t wait to introduce some of my pre-teen faves like Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five, the Secret Seven and the Five Find-Outers. Also, my favourite The Three Investigators by Alfred Hitchcock!
What are you reading now?
Flour Babies by Anne Rice and Madame Bovary by Gustav Flaubert.
Do you keep a TBR (to be read) list?
Sort of, especially for books that have been sent to me for review.
What’s next?
Looking out for upcoming books to review! I also can’t wait to see the lot of cheap reads my uncle has helped to buy from abroad…
I’ve not found a bookstore selling English books here, which means I don’t want to wait until I’m in a desperate situation with no new books to read!
What books would you like to reread?
Young adult novels like The Runner by Cynthia Voight, Anne of Green Gables and many, many more I used to devour when I was teaching a pre-university English course.
Who are your favourite authors?
Stephen King. James Patterson. Enid Blyton. Lucy Maud Montgomery. I have many more but they don’t come to mind now…
